ABOUT US
Before homeschooling my own kids, I was first a classroom teacher in the inner city public school. While there were definitely cons to the experience of teaching in the mainstream, the children I had in my classroom became some of my best teachers. I had a room full of little ones, all there to learn, all with different strengths and weaknesses and learning styles. And I'm sad to say, there was little to zero parent involvement or support. These kids pushed me to search for ways to reach into the tough learning situations, and find a way to make things click, while also making it fun and enjoyable.
These children, along with some of the mentors I sought out for help, put tools into my teaching tool belt that I wouldn't have gained otherwise. It was hard, no doubt. I remember days of arriving at the school before dark, praying for help, even with tears, that I could reach these children-- and give them gifts. The gift of literacy, the gift of loving learning, the gift of knowing someone was cheering them on.
The area I taught in was severely impoverished. Some of my students lived in homeless shelters or motels or foster care. Most were from single-parent homes. I imagine that some of the children I had as kindergartners never made it to high school graduation day. But I hope they remember a teacher who gave it all she had and loved them sincerely.
These children gave me the gift of a deep love and confidence in teaching. Teaching really does make me come alive. I always knew I would homeschool my own kids, before I was even married. (I just didn't know I would love it this much!)
Over the years, I worked in the homes of half a dozen + homeschooling families as an assistant teacher to Mom. These beautiful moms taught me more than I could express here. I also worked as a free tutor in children's group homes for foster children, teaching kids how to read.
In 2020, I hosted a micro-kindergarten out of my home. We moved the furniture out of the guest bedroom and brought in a small table, book shelves, and school supplies. It was the sweetest, richest year teaching my daughter and a few of her friends.
So, there's just a little about me in the olden days! These days, I have a 7-year-old girl, and a 4-year-old little boy. Not every day is easy, but it is my delight to be their mama, and I honestly adore being their teacher. My husband Jon and I have been married 15 years this May. We're both in our 40s and don silver strands in our hair.
